JNS.org – Since the launch of Operation Protective Edge, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has spoken to the leaders of a number of Israel’s top allies who have reiterated the Jewish state’s right to defend itself against rocket attacks. But as of Thursday, U.S. President Barack Obama had not yet reached out to Netanyahu.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Netanyahu has had phone conversations with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande, and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, The Times of Israel reported. But as far as American officials go, Netanyahu has only spoken to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
The silence from the White House comes as Obama’s top Mideast adviser, Philip Gordon, is in Israel for meetings with Israeli and Palestinian officials. Gordon has drawn heat for a speech he delivered at the Haaretz Conference on Peace on Tuesday, in which he heavily criticized Israel’s policies towards the Palestinians amid ongoing Palestinian rocket attacks against Israeli civilians.
“Israel confronts an undeniable reality: It cannot maintain military control of another people indefinitely. Doing so is not only wrong but a recipe for resentment and recurring instability,” Gordon said.
