JNS.org – The Egyptian government has proposed a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
The agreement, announced Monday, would stipulate that both sides begin de-escalating violence as of 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to encourage the other seven members of Israel’s security cabinet to accept the proposal in an early-morning meeting before the deadline.
The proposal calls for Israel and all Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip to end hostilities toward one another within 12 hours of “unconditional acceptance” of the deal, reported The Associated Press, which obtained a copy of the proposal.
Gaza’s border crossing should be re-opened “once the security situation becomes stable,” the proposal states. Forty-eight hours after the cease-fire begins, Egyptian officials plan to convene Israeli and Hamas officials for more negotiations.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is considering traveling to the region to help broker the cease-fire deal.
