Unconfirmed reports are filtering into the Israeli media of several dozen IDF soldiers wounded in brutal ground-level firefights with Hamas in Gaza.
Malka Davidovitch, a nurse at Ashkelon’s Barzilai Hospital which is treating some 50 soldiers wounded in fighting was summoned to the ER to treat incoming wounded, and, to her shock and dismay, discovered that one of the wounded was her own son, Israel’s Channel 2 reported on Sunday.
“My son was lightly wounded,” she told a reporter, but immediately added that “my prayer is that those who sustained more severe wounds heal and be released as soon as possible.”
After arriving at the center for her shift, “I had no idea that he was here. My family ‘bluffed’ me and said that he was serving in the north, so I wasn’t even that worried,” she admitted.
“Then, all of a sudden they called me into the ER – my son had asked them to call for me,” she said. “Then, I saw that his wounds were of a nature that were operable, so I calmed down.”
Davidovitch noted that “in my opinion, he’s still in total trauma shock – he’s asking all the time about his buddies, and he doesn’t really understand what happened to them.”
But, she concluded, “Mine and his story aren’t particularly special – the story is about those kids.”
