Israel Says United Nations Calls for Investigation Are a ‘Travesty’
by Shiryn Ghermezian
After the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) pledged to launch an investigation into Israel’s current military offensive in Gaza, the Jewish state said on Wednesday that such an examination “is a travesty and should be rejected by decent people everywhere.”
“Rather than investigate Hamas, which is committing a double war crime by firing rockets at Israeli civilians while hiding behind Palestinian civilians, the UNHRC calls for an investigation of Israel, which has gone to unprecedented lengths to keep Palestinian civilians out of harm’s way, including by dropping leaflets, making phone calls and sending text messages,” read a statement from Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.
The statement said that by failing to condemn Hamas’ use of human shields, and instead placing blame on Israel for deaths caused by “this grotesque human shields policy,” the UNHRC is systematically telling all terror organizations that using civilians as human shields is a successful military strategy.
Netanyahu’s office said that the UNHRC should instead be investigating Hamas’ use of human shields. Examples include the terror group’s use of hospitals for military command centers, schools for weapons storage depots, and placing missile batteries next to playgrounds, private homes and mosques.
The investigation into Israel’s actions was announced after United Nations Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay said that the Jewish state may have committed war crimes during its current military campaign in Gaza.
“There seems to be a strong possibility that international law has been violated in a manner that could amount to war crimes,” said Pillay, who has long been accused of bias against Israel.
Pillay called for Israel to take “accountability” for its actions, saying it is “the first step toward ensuring that the cycle of human rights violations and impunity [is] brought to an end,” The Times of Israel reported. A lasting peace “can only begin with respect for human rights and human dignity on both sides, and ultimately, in the full realization of the right to self-determination.”
Netanyahu’s office concluded: “This investigation by a kangaroo court is a foregone conclusion.”
“The predicable result will be the libeling of Israel and even greater use of human shields in the future by Hamas. Those who will pay the price will be not only Israelis but also Palestinians who Hamas will redouble its efforts to use as human shields in the future.”
