United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) Spokesman Chris Gunness was unable to hold back tears, during an interview with Qatar’s Al Jazeera television on Wednesday, possibly over what Palestinians charge are Israeli shelling attacks.
Gaza officials say UNRWA schools have been hit on at least six occasions.
“The rights of Palestinians, even their children, are wholesale denied and it’s appalling,” he said, and then burst into tears, covering his face.
The cameraman then turned the camera away, ending the short interview.
The UNRWA itself has admitted that Palestinian militants have hidden rockets at three facilities, among them schools, in recent weeks.
On each occasion, the UN organization said it handed the munitions over to local Palestinian authorities, which would nominally be Hamas.
“Palestinians in Gaza say, if we are not safe in an UNRWA school we are not safe in Gaza,” Gunness said on Thursday, according to The Jerusalem Post.
Three Israeli soldiers were killed on Wednesday as they searched a putative UNRWA clinic in northern Gaza, when Palestinians detonated bombs hidden in the facility, killing the trio of Maglan unit troops.
“What killed the (3) Maglan unit soldiers yesterday was a one-ton bomb made up of 12 80-kilo drums hidden beneath the floor of the UNRWA clinic, and surrounding the entrance to the hidden tunnel,” Channel 2 News said Thursday.
