Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Wednesday night thanked U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry for America’s “unequivocal support” of Israel at the United Nations General Assembly, where, “thanks to the concerted effort, the adoption of a binding anti-Israeli resolution was prevented.”
At the U.N on Wednesday, Israeli Ambassador Ron Prosor said: “If the U.N. assembly had invested a tenth of the energy invested in investigating Israel, it would reveal horrific war crimes on the part of Hamas.”
“The international community has lost its way,” Prosor said. “This organization was founded to promote morality, truth, and justice. Unfortunately, that is not its mission now.”
In a statement on Thursday, the Israeli Foreign Ministry also said that Lieberman told Kerry “that the Palestinian statement in Cairo, that they are not committed to the continuation of the ceasefire, is coercive” and “Israel will take this into account and is prepared for any eventuality.”
Lieberman also brought up the issue of Turkey, telling Kerry that “Israel has so far refrained from responding to the harsh statements and accusations by Prime Minister [Recep Tayyip] Erdoğan against Israel, and hopes that after the Turkish elections next Sunday these attacks will cease.” He said “that Israel is not interested in an escalation with Turkey,” but if the rhetoric does not end, “Israel will respond.”
The Turkey-U.S. relationship has soured in recent days as four members of the U.S. Congress felt the need to write to Erdoğan, personally, to object to his recent “historically inaccurate and provocative” statements about Israel’s Operation Protective Edge, and tell the Turkish prime minister that his “inflammatory rhetoric” could negatively impact their work to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
