Dramatic Go-Pro helmet camera footage caught by an IDF infantryman during a patrol in Gaza, shows uncertainty, violence, and humanity in the heat of battle.
“Looks to me that we’re going to die here,” one soldier tells another as the squad cautiously moves thought destroyed structures.
In the clip, which an Engineering Corps reservist sent to Israel’s Channel 10 News, troops are seen going house-to-house through rubble-strewn streets, firing out of destroyed kitchens, examining bombs and explosives gear they come across in abandoned sites, kicking in doors, and blowing up structures.
While “armchair generals” watching from afar slam the IDF for purported war crimes, while watching these troops operate moment-to-moment in the heat of battle, the putative “Rules of Engagement” are far less obvious.
The footage provides a “real-time” look at the complexities and uncertainties of war in hostile urban areas, as troops, rifles at the ready, come across a Palestinian woman at a distance and call to her to stop approaching them. It is unclear if she understands the calls and shouts, and keeps walking slowly towards them.
“Stop or I’ll shoot you!” a soldier shouts in Arabic. “Stop – stop!” he repeats, and when she keeps walking, fires several rounds ahead of her, as per IDF open-fire regulations. The soldier with the helmet camera is seen gesturing to her to stop and move back.
In the end, they do not open fire at her, but rather throw a non-fragmenting shock grenade – like a powerful firecracker – at her, and move on.
At one tense point, one soldier is seen crossing an open area to check if a Palestinian laying on the ground is wounded or dead, while his buddies demand he keep his distance, as per protocol, fearing snipers or that the body is booby-trapped.
