The body of an American-born IDF soldier who went missing on Sunday has been found, the IDF confirmed Tuesday evening.
Givati Brigade soldier 1st Cpl. David Menachem Gordon, 21, was found with his weapon by his side, a statement read.
His family has been notified, and the IDF has opened an investigation into the circumstances of his death.
“We are so sorry. Dave was always a smiling face, a friend, a great writer, a tough tough tough human being,” The Israel Lone Soldier Center said in a tweet.
Gordon was last seen at the Tzrifin military base in the center of the country, where he underwent dental treatment, according to police.
Gordon, who was a radioman in the army, “took part in fighting during Operation Protective Edge,” police officials said earlier in the day.
“He arrived for dental treatment at Tzrifin, received the treatment,” after which he disappeared, according to Walla News.
“From conversations with his officers, we understand that he’s not ‘problematic’ – just the opposite: he’s a motivated, outstanding soldier, which only raises our concern,” police said before the discovery.
His adoptive family in Herzliya reported his disappearance on Sunday.
Last month, Gordon wrote on his Facebook wall, “Unbelievably overwhelmed, not from this mission but from the support and messages of encouragement from family, friends and strangers. I am OK and I’ve never felt more loved. Thank you all! Taking a short break and then I’m off again,” according to Haaretz.
