In a unique gesture, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally blessed the marriage of an Israeli officer, who was wounded by a Hamas-set bomb near Gaza in 2012, in a video clip aired at the wedding, Tuesday night.

Cap. Ziv Shilon, a company commander in the Givati Brigade, lost his left arm and sustained severe wounds when a bomb set alongside the border fence detonated as he passed by on a patrol, in Oct. 2012, not long before the IDF embarked on Operation Pillar of Defense against Hamas, in the coastal enclave.

Addressing Shilon, and his fiancée, Adi, who were married in the southern city of Ofakim, near Gaza, Netanyahu said he was “impressed with your deep connection with Adi and from the love you share, from the fact that you take life and move forward despite the pain.”

Netanyahu recalled visiting Shilon after his injury, “…and being so deeply impressed by your valor, your spirit, your personality, and I must tell you – also from your family.”

Netanyahu developed a close relationship with Shilon during his convalescence, and visited with Shilon, Adi, and family members, in his parents home in Beersheba, last year.

“I want to congratulate you and wish you on behalf of myself and my wife, Sarah, that you live in a happy partnership, you deserve it. Mazel Tov,” Netanyahu said.
