A member of Sweden’s ruling Social Democratic Party wrote on his Facebook page over the summer that “the Israeli Mossad” provided training to ISIS, Israel’s NRG News reported Sunday, quoting a local newspaper.
“ISIS is being trained by the Israeli Mossad. Muslims are not waging war, they are being used as pawns by other peoples’ game,” Adrian Kaba, who represents the Social Democratic Party of Sweden on the Malmö City Council and the regional government, wrote in a statement on his Facebook page on July 21, the Swedish newspaper Sydsvenskan revealed.
In reaction, regional party chairman, Joakim Sandell, said, “An elected official should not be spreading conspiracy theories,” and said his party would deal with the incident, without elaborating, according to the JTA.
Kaba later pulled the post, saying “I now realize I was wrong. Whether there is evidence that this is a conspiracy theory here, I would like to reject it without hesitation,” the newspaper said.
“This is a very serious issue,” noted Henrik Bachner, a researcher working on behalf of the Swedish Committee Against Anti-Semitism.
The several hundred Jews in the city of 300,000 are regular victims of anti-semitic attacks, and many are leaving for safer havens, both within Sweden, and beyond.
Overall, death threats, daily anti-Semitic attacks, and harassment are causing many young Swedish Jews of the shrinking 20,000-member community to say “enough,” and seek to establish their futures elsewhere.
“I and my friends decided to leave,” 22-year-old Victor Borslöv-Reichmann, told NRG, after getting his 11th death threat after posting pro-Israeli views on his Facebook page.
The imbroglio comes in the wake of a statement by incoming Swedish Prime Minister, Stefan Lofven, on Friday, saying that his country would recognize Palestinian territories as a state.
This is the first time an European Union state has made such a dramatic declaration.
In his inaugural speech in Parliament in Stockholm on Friday, Lofven, detailing his foreign policy vision, said that “The conflict between Israel and Palestine can only be solved with a two-state solution, negotiated in accordance with international law,” Lovfen said. “Sweden will therefore recognize the state of Palestine.”
Both Israel and the United States State Department sharply criticized the move.
“The more international support the Palestinians receive without being required to negotiate and without paying their due in mutual concessions, the less likely an accord becomes,” Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister Tzachi Hanegbi told Israel Radio Sunday.
Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman said in a statement a day earlier that “If the situation in the Middle East is what concerns the Swedish prime minister in his inaugural speech, he would be better off focusing on more pressing matters in the region such as the daily mass killings taking place in Syria, Iraq and other places.”
