Atlanta – Shortly after the conclusion of Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish faith, anti-Semitism reared its ugly head on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta. Students residing at the Jewish fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi) were the target of “crude, offensive graffiti, including swastikas,” according to statement released by the university.
An image posted on Twitter by Emory Alumnus Dr. Hugh Flax reveal Swastikas on the house near the front door.
In a release to the Emory community, University President Jim Wagner wrote:
On behalf of our community, I denounce this abhorrent act. It is an offense against a Jewish fraternity and the Jewish members of our community, and it is a repugnant, flagrant emblem of anti-Semitism. It is also an offense against the entire university. Among the many pernicious things the swastika symbolizes, in the last century it represented the most egregious and determined undermining of intellectual freedom and truth-seeking. In short, its appearance on our campus is an attack against everything for which Emory stands.
According to a report by the Emory Wheel, AEPi issued a statement on behalf of the fraternity thanking the community for its support, calling this act of anti-Semitism an “insensitive display of prejudice.”
The Emory Student Government Association has asked the community to wear blue on Monday to show solidarity with Emory’s Jewish community and to condemn this “reprehensible act of bigotry.”
Emory police are investigating the incident and have stepped up patrols in the area according to the university statement.
Drawn swastikas on the Emory campus were recently discovered in a university building. Emory police were notified on September 10 that Swastikas were “drawn on the eighth floor” of the school library.
