A joint operation between the Shin Bet intelligence service and the Israeli police overnight arrested eight eastern Jerusalem Arabs suspected of inciting for jihad attacks against Israelis via Facebook and other social media, police told reporters Monday.
Some of the suspects are affiliated with Hamas, according to police Spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld, who added that the distributed content included “spreading photos, videos, and inciting and encouraging carrying out attacks against Jews.”
Several are also connected the Palestinian Authority’s Fatah wing, according to Israel’s NRG News.
The suspects, police charged, distributed on pages carrying their names photos and video statements praising the terrorists who carried out recent attacks in Jerusalem , as well as photos of some of the suspects in possession of weapons such as pistols, and M-16 semi-automatic rifles, and improvised grenades.
SWAT teams arrested the suspects, and confiscated hard drives, mobile devices and removable media, police said.
The Facebook posts have led to many reactions from thousands of the suspects’ followers, who have strengthened their statements, and expressed support for carrying out attacks.
The arrests are one of many operations implemented by Jerusalem police against incitement through social networking and media, Rosenfeld said.
