State Seeks Death Penalty for Suspect in Kansas City Jewish Center Shooting

The state of Kansas is seeking the death penalty against the man accused of killing three people at a Jewish community center in April, Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe announced Thursday.
Frazier Glenn Cross, also known as Frazier Glenn Miller, appeared in court on Thursday. Johnson County District Judge Kelly Ryan ordered a competency evaluation for Miller last month after the suspect’s attorney requested it. After reviewing the results of the evaluation conducted on Dec. 3 by Johnson County Mental Health, Ryan ruled that Miller is mentally fit to stand trial.
Miller’s preliminary hearing was set for March 2.
The Missouri native is charged with capital murder in the April 13 shooting that killed Terri LaManno, 53, William Lewis Corporon, 69, and Reat Griffin Underwood, 14. Miller told The Kansas City Star that he wanted to kill Jews in the attacks. However, none of his victims was Jewish.
Mindy Corporon,the mother of Reat Underwood, released a written statement following news of the death penalty.
“We make no comment on the ongoing criminal proceedings surrounding Reat, Bill and Mrs. LaManno. We respect the judicial process and have faith that justice will prevail,” the statement said in part. “During this holiday season, we pray for every person, regardless of race or religion, who has lost a loved one; and ask all people to pursue goodness and grace over evil and hate today, and every day.”
