Lord Alan Sugar, the flamboyant British-Jewish businessman and television personality, has called in London’s Metropolitan Police after receiving antisemitic abuse on Twitter.
Sugar, who is a vocal supporter of English Premier League soccer team Tottenham Hotspur, was branded an “old Jewish c***” on the social network by a supporter of rival team Crystal Palace. The tweet was sent after Palace defeated Tottenham 2-1 in a crucial league game last Saturday.
Sugar promptly alerted Scotland Yard to the racist remark by replying to the force’s official account: “@metpoliceuk follow this up this is a formal complaint.”
A spokesman for City of Westminster Police said: “Police at the palace of Westminster have today received an allegation of malicious communication, relating to offensive messages on Twitter.
“The messages are alleged to be of a racist and anti-Semitic nature and directed at a male victim. Inquiries continue.”
