Further details of the terrorist career of Hezbollah operative Jihad Mughniyeh have emerged following his reported death in an Israeli Air Force strike yesterday, Israel’s Ch. 2 News reported Monday.
In Sunday’s reported helicopter gunship strike near Quneitra in the central Golan Heights, at least 11 Hezbollah and senior Iranian officials died when rockets hit their convoy.
Western intelligence officials who followed the activities of Mughniyeh recently called him a “no-holds-barred terrorist,” who they said worked to perpetrate attacks against Israel in the Golan Heights.
Mughniyeh headed a “broad and deep” Iranian-sponsored infrastructure which has already acted against Israel in the past in the Golan Heights, according to the sources.
It is suspected that Mughniyeh was planning more serious attacks against Israel, including rocket strikes and terror cell infiltrations, using explosives and anti-tank missiles.
Mughniyeh “put together a serious terrorist organization, with many capabilities and was busy preparing major attacks,” one source said.
Meanwhile, IDF forces in the north are reportedly implementing undisclosed measures meant to prevent the Lebanon-based terrorist organization from responding, whether by firing rockets at the Jewish State or by other means.
Mughniyah’s death was “a hard blow to take,” Turkish media reported Hezbollah as saying in response to Sunday’s attack.
Hezbollah said they had elevated their military preparedness, although officials in southern Lebanon said they were unaware of any changes on the ground.
While Israel has not yet officially acknowledged the air strike, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said in a radio interview that, “If Hezbollah claims their people were killed, they should explain what they were doing in Syria in the first place.”
