Philanthropist and president of the World Jewish Congress
Ronald Lauder does not sit idly by as global events unfold around him. For decades, the philanthropist has immersed himself in politics and Jewish affairs, notably serving as US ambassador to Austria and president of the World Jewish Congress (WJC). In his WJC role, he has spoken out against antisemitism worldwide and defended Israel against calls for boycotts; he also has played a key role in recovering Nazi-looted art works. A few other items of particular note: Lauder owns part of Israel’s Channel 10; he opened the Neue Galerie in New York, a museum dedicated to art from Germany and Austria from the early 20th century; and founded the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation, dedicated to rebuilding Jewish communities in Central and Eastern Europe.
