To be sure, the little girl in the red coat will continue to transfix viewers of filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s seminal Schindler’s List, which won an Academy Award and raised global awareness about the World War II rescue efforts of Oskar Schindler. Yet it is his subsequent founding of the USC Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual History and Education that may have a greater impact, especially as the number of Holocaust survivors continues to dwindle. The foundation, which primarily documents and archives testimonies of survivors and other witnesses to the Holocaust, engages the latest technology to produce powerful exhibits. As a result of Spielberg’s prescience, the tens of thousands of recorded testimonies will preserve the memory of the Holocaust and disarm deniers and revisionists, for generations to come.
