Reports emerged late on Tuesday of several allegations of voter fraud in Israel’s general election that saw Prime Minister Netanyahu emerge as a clear victor.
Some of the instances of voter irregularities were in Arab and Haredi areas, according to Israel National News. The irregularities included alleged ballot stuffing, voter intimidation, fights and missing ballots.
The Jewish Press reported that “[p]olice checked out 235 cases of voting problems and 51 investigations have been officially opened. 23 people have been arrested for ballot stuffing, stealing voting slips and threatening voting officials. One voting station in the south was shut down after it reported 100% voter turnout in the early morning.”
According to The New York Times, Netanyahu’s opponents claimed racism when the Prime Minister accused the Joint Arab List and leftists of using foreign money to drive Arab voters in buses to polling stations today. Chemi Shalev of Haaretz even tweeted that reports of busing were “figments of a ‘frightened’ Netanyahu’s imagination.”
