Kissinger on Iran Deal: ‘We Can’t Have Confidence in the Agreement, Only in the Verification System’ (VIDEO)

Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger on Wednesday continued his questioning of the Iran nuclear framework agreement announced by the White House last week, asserting that a deal alone won’t be sufficient to prevent the Islamic Republic from marching towards nuclear weaponization.
“We can’t have confidence in the agreement. We must have confidence in the verification system and the inspection system that will have to be refined. I think we should see what the negotiations can produce in the next three months. We cannot rely on the word of Iran,” he said during a Fox News interview with correspondent Greta Van Susteren.
Kissinger said that the current state of the talks left him “very uneasy” and he called for “as close to a fool proof inspection system as can be devised.”
Kissinger first pointed out how hard it would be to ensure Iran will abide by any nuclear agreement in a joint op-ed with fellow former Secretary of State George P. Shultz published by The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. Kissinger and Shultz raised numerous tough questions regarding the recently reached framework deal between Iran and world powers.
He told Van Susteren he wrote the op-ed to point out “issues of verification” in the agreement and “issues of strategic relationships in the region.”
“We must prevent nuclear weapons spreading all over the Middle East,” he said, also citing the danger of having nuclear arms directed “even against us” in the US.
