It is imperative that the U.S. and its negotiating partners “amend … correct, upgrade and improve” the nuclear deal with Iran, Israel’s Zionist Union head Isaac Herzog told the BBC on Monday.
Herzog — who will likely lead the opposition once Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu forms a government — said that on the “crux of the challenge of the Iranian nuclear program, there is no difference” between his stance and that of Netanyahu.
“There is no coalition and opposition here,” he said.
Herzog stressed however that he differed with the prime minister on the “way to work [such amendments] out.” Speaking at a town hall meeting in Tel Aviv last Saturday, he said he opposed the prime minister’s public lobbying to get the details of the Iranian deal changed.
Critics of the Iran deal, led by Netanyahu, say the White House has made far too many concessions in talks with Iran. Netanyahu has said that it paves Iran’s path to nuclear armament and leaves Israel vulnerable.
Israel has long called for the removal of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure as well as the cessation of uranium enrichment.
