Vandals wrecked an exhibition to honor Sweden and Denmark’s so-called White Bus operation to rescue Jews from concentration camps during World War II, Swedish news site The Local reported over the weekend.
Vandals removed a section of text documenting only how the operation saved Jews, among other prisoners of Nazi Germany, according to the report.
One of the organizers of the exhibit Reverend Mikael Ringlander, told The Local that a ceremony for the exhibit held on Saturday at a local synagogue must have “angered someone.”
He said the antisemitic vandalism took place Saturday night.
The weekend exhibit, held in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, marked 70 years since Sweden’s Red Cross together with the Danish government sent buses painted white to extricate prisoners from concentration camps in Nazi-controlled Europe.
While the effort targeted specifically Scandinavian prisoners at first, its purview quickly expanded to include prisoners from other countries as well.
In total, the operations rescued more than 15,000 prisoners from probable death, and may have helped Denmark maintain one of the lowest percentages of Jewish victims compared to other European countries in WWII. 423 Danish Jews were rescued in the operation.
