Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged that he will need to make some territorial concessions in any future agreement with the Palestinians.
The statement was made during his meeting with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, on Monday – according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
“I am aware that in any agreement there will be areas which will remain under Israeli control just as there will be areas which will remain under Palestinian control,” Netanyahu said according to the report.
Those remarks have sparked criticism from members of Netanyahu’s government.
“If in fact there is truth to the report, we are talking about a dangerous and unprecedented proposal which contradicts the first clause of the guidelines of this government,” Minister Uri Ariel of Jewish Home said on Tuesday. “I expect all the members of the coalition and especially the prime minister to keep those guidelines.”
