Battle Erupts Over New York Presidential Primary Set for Passover

The decision to move New York’s presidential primary date to avoid a conflict with the Passover holiday has local officials worried about losing bonus delegates to the 2016 Democratic convention, the New York Daily News reported on Friday.
Former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver led a successful push to move the primary from April 26 to April 19, which local officials fear will deprive New York of dozens of delegates. The additional delegates are awarded by the Democratic National Committee to states that cluster their primaries on one day.
“Changing the date is a win for democracy that gives so many more New Yorkers the freedom to vote for their next president on Election Day,” Silver said when the change of date was announced on Tuesday.
New York typically has a base of more than 250 delegates and the bonus delegates usually boost that number by 15 percent, according to the Daily News.
A Silver spokesperson said the former Assembly speaker is trying to convince the DNC to still award New York the bonus delegates.
One Jewish DNC member, who was unhappy with the vote, said of the successful petition, “This was Shelly [Silver] showing he had influence.”
