The Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot announced the formation of a new IDF commando unit that will combine several of the Israeli army’s reconnaissance combat units, Israel’s NRG reported on Monday.
The new elite unit will include infantrymen from several brigades, including the Paratroopers, Golani, and Givati.
The unit’s establishment was announced as part of an extensive multi-annual reorganization initiative spearheaded by Eizenkot, dubbed “Gideon.”
The unit’s commander will be Col. David Zinni, who currently serves as the operations officer of the IDF’s Central Command and has previously held many commander positions within Golani.
A military source cited in the report said the consolidation will allow soldiers from the various units to train under a single framework.
