Rep. Nita M. Lowey became the latest Democratic lawmaker to announce opposition to the Iran nuclear deal pursued by the Obama administration, bringing the prospect of a congressional rejection one seat closer to fruition.
Lowey said the risks posed by the deal were too high for its safeguards to handle. She warned that lifting sanctions on ballistic missiles and conventional weapons would boost Iranian support for terrorism and spawn a regional arms race; some have warned that Gulf countries would scramble to obtain a nuclear weapon if Iran cheats on the deal.
The New York Democrat cautioned that Iran has become more anti-American, anti-Israel and antisemitic since the leaders of the Islamic revolution severed ties with the U.S. in 1980 and has refused to address international nuclear inspectors’ concerns it was working to assemble a nuclear warhead, which many believe could be launched at Israel, Europe or even the U.S. with the ballistic missiles Iran would be allowed to produce en masse with the lifting of the arms embargo.
Additionally, Lowey said the agreement failed to guarantee the fullest international action to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon: diplomatic, economic, military.
Despite Lowey’s rejection, many predict enough Democrats will be able to uphold the Obama administration’s Iran deal, though many lawmakers have yet to announce their positions.
