During his visit to Lebanon, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that Iran will continue its unwavering support for its Lebanese proxy Hezbollah in the fight against Israel, Tasnim News Agency reported on Thursday.
“Iran has always stood by the Resistance Front [another name for Hezbollah] against the Zionist regime and has supported the glorious moves by Lebanese, Palestinian and (other) Arab and Muslim brothers … and will always continue pursuing this honorable path,” Zarif said during a meeting with leaders of various Palestinian and Lebanese groups, in Beirut.
He also called for Middle Eastern countries to unite and face the “threat” posed by Israel and terrorism.
“Regional countries should cooperate to promote peace and stability,” said Zarif, who is in Lebanon as part of his new tour of regional countries, in a joint press conference with his Lebanese counterpart, Gebran Bassil, in Beirut on Wednesday. He added that regional nations should side with each other against their two enemies, “the Zionist regime” and terrorism.
During the meeting, Zarif also blamed Israel for the tense relations between Iran and the United States. He said that Israeli propaganda over the course of the last 36 years caused deep mistrust between the two countries, but that the signing of the JCPoA hailed the beginning of a change in relations between Tehran and Washington.
On Tuesday night, Zarif also met with Hassan Nasrallah, the Secretary General of the Iranian-proxy terrorist group Hezbollah, to discuss regional affairs and developments.
In the meeting, Zarif blamed the ongoing problems of the countries in the region on Israel, saying Jerusalem had a policy of stirring up rifts in the Middle East, a criticism often leveled at Iran by Israel, Gulf countries and western intelligence agencies. Zarif also said Iran has no intention of meddling in Lebanese affairs.
