Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa accused Iran of smuggling a quantity of explosives to its proxies in Bahrain so large that it could have leveled the country’s capital Manama, London-based pan-Arab newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reported on Thursday.
In an interview with the paper during a recent visit to Paris, Al Khalifa referred to Bahrain’s arrest last month of a terrorist cell smuggling Iranian-supplied weapons into the country.
“Do you realize the size of the amount of this material [C4 explosives] that have been smuggled into Bahrain? It was enough to wipe the city of Manama out of existence. And we didn’t discover this on our own, but in cooperation with our allies in the Gulf region, including the United States Navy and others,” he said.
He also said that the nuclear agreement signed between Iran and the P5+1 powers does not adequately address the sources of tension with Tehran. He added that if Iran continues down its current path of creating chaos and instability, the Gulf states will not have benefited from the agreement at all.
