The upcoming wedding of Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli to Israeli businessman Adi Ezra has stirred up anger in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community at the rabbi who will officiate at the ceremony on Thursday, Israel’s Walla reported on Monday.
Rabbi David Grosman, the renowned leader of the “Migdal Or” educational institutions and the chief rabbi of Migdal HeEmek, was attacked in a recent column by Haredi journalist Yisrael Glis.
“Rabbi Grosman took all of the glory of his activities and buried it under the wretched chuppah [wedding canopy] of a woman who behaves immodestly,” he wrote.
He also claimed that the damage to Grosman’s image as a result would be “huge,” asserting, “Along with many others, I also find it regrettable, particularly as I imagine the rabbi standing before the model [Refaeli] who dishonors the daughters of Israel with her lack of modesty.”
But Glis’s stance was strongly opposed by Meir Gal, owner of the Haredi website, Behadrei Haredim.
Gal wrote, “So there is a rabbi in Israel officiating the marriage of a Jewish couple in Israel — even though he gets no honor or prestige out of this; even though other rabbis refused; and even though this will not bring a single shekel to his institutions. This sums up Rabbi Grosman.”
Regarding Refaeli’s modesty or lack thereof, Gal said, “She hasn’t sent me any pictures of her wardrobe — but let me say that on any given night, rabbis across the country are officiating at the weddings of brides no more modest than Ms. Bar Refaeli.”
