Inspired by the recent flurry of Arab knifing attacks against Israeli Jews, supporters of the Islamic State have flocked to social media to vocalize their affiliation with the terrorists in Israel and the West Bank, even offering advice on how to inflict greater damage against their victims, media outlet Vocativ reported on Wednesday.
According to the site, members of one ISIS-supporting forum posted an article that sought to “justify” attacks against Jews, as well as recommend ways to improve the lethal nature of these attacks, including using serrated rather than straight-edged blades and lacing the knives with poisonous substances.
Vocativ, which mines online data to compile its news, also said several posts had made a connection — however untrue — between the knives in the weeks-long spate of attacks and those used by ISIS militants to decapitate their hostages, a tactic that really drew attention in 2014 with the beheadings of a number of westerners.
According to the report, ISIS supporters on Twitter have taken to hashtags such as “#The_Intifada_was_launched” (#الانتفاضه_انطلقت) and “Al-Aqsa” (#الاقصى). Israeli security and diplomatic officials prefer to avoid characterizing the current escalation in violence as an “intifada,” an Arabic word meaning “shaking off,” which brings back memories of years of intense back-and-forth violence, hundreds of casualties and suicide bombings in the Jewish state’s largest metropolises.
One post from an ISIS supporter was written in Hebrew as a warning to Israelis: “Oh Jews, the promise has approached, expect a new Masada. (#The_Caliphate_State. #Slaughter_Of_Jews. #The_Intifada_was _launched. #Al-Aqsa. #Jeruslam.)”
Another, a rather crude rendering of a photograph of the Old City of Jerusalem with the iconic Dome of the Rock (Haram al-Sharif) around which many say the current round of violence was triggered, features the Islamic State’s usual cavalcade of sun-scorched Toyota pickups racing for the Old City walls — a vision reminiscent of an Iranian-produced video imagining the Islamic takeover of Jerusalem.
Separately, the hashtag “#The_Intifada_was_launched” was also being used by Palestinian cartoonist Omayya Juha from Gaza, who posted a cartoon image on Wednesday of a bloody paring knife removing a “Jewish peel” from the golden Dome of the Rock.
