Iran confirmed that five Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) members were killed in Syria over the past two days, the Saudi-owned Al Arabiya reported on Tuesday.
Among these were three officers, one of whom, Mehdi Ali Doost, was an adviser to the Syrian regime and formerly an IRGC commander in Qom, south of Tehran. The other two were Lieutenants Kamil Qorban and Hassan Ahmadi, from the IRGC’s Isfahan-based Eighth Legion.
The Eighth Legion has suffered the highest number of Iranian casualties in Syria, according to Al Arabiya.
Two high-ranking members of the Iranian paramilitary Basij militia — Mujtaba Karmi and Majid Sanei — were also killed while fighting on behalf of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime.
A separate report by Al Arabiya said that another high-ranking Iranian, Nader Hamid, a close associate of Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani, was killed in battle against Syrian rebels in Quneitra, near the Syrian-Israeli border.
Al Arabiya noted that there were conflicting reports about the exact nature of Hamid’s position, with some claiming that he was commanding the Basij forces operating in Syria, and others saying he was an IRGC commander.
Word on the deaths of these Iranian officers comes on the heels of Tehran’s confirmation that two senior IRGC commanders, Brigadier General Farshad Hassounizadeh and Hamid Moukhtarband, were killed in Syria less than a week ago.
Earlier this month, Iran also laid to rest Major General Hossein Hamedani, who was killed while taking part in a battle in Aleppo. Hamedani was an IRGC commander who served as an adviser to the Syrian government and oversaw pro-Assad Quds Force operations.
Al Arabiya noted that since the advent of Russian intervention in Syria, Iran has increased its direct participation in the civil war. As a result, Tehran has suffered the loss of 22 casualties over the last two weeks, including six officers/advisers, who took part in ground offensives in the outskirts of Latakia, Hama and Aleppo.
