Longtime Middle East correspondent for NBC, Martin Fletcher, went on the air with Kate Snow on MSNBC on Monday to correct a misleading map that appeared during a segment in which he was actually featured as a commentator.
The map was featured as part of a graphic representation in the shifts of Israeli sovereignty in territories previously a part of the British Mandate, since 1946. The first map, from 1946, showed most of the land in green, which it marked as part of a territory called Palestine.
During the program, Fletcher predicted that the lack of an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal would lead to more “Palestinian land” being “eaten up” by Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
Fletcher went back on the air on Monday to say “I wish I’d said something right away when I saw it,” referring to the maps MSNBC sought to correct, and explained how the first of four maps shown incorrectly implied that in 1946 there was a Palestinian state that Israel has since conquered territory from over the past several decades.
Continuing, he said the first map made it seem as if the British Mandate was full mostly of Arabs, which he argued was also incorrect. Fletcher, who reported from the Middle East for over three decades, explained that there were about 500,000 Jews in the territories shown for the Arabs’ 1,000,000-person population.
