The U.K. Daily Mail changed one long headline to another on Monday, concerning a violent incident between an Israeli driver and Palestinian motorists that resulted in his death.
The original Mail headline stated that “Israeli motorist pays with his life for attacking Palestinian’s truck with a club when he is run over and killed.” Later, it was altered to read, “Club-wielding Israeli driver is run over and killed by Palestinian’s truck after he confronts gang who had pelted his car with stones.”
The changed headline was reported by Israeli news website nrg. The report reflects concern among many that some major media outlets mislead in their reporting of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. CNN, The New York Times, and other leading publications have recently altered and amended headlines and stories following criticism.
According to Israeli reports, the incident on Wednesday began when the Israeli man’s vehicle was pelted with stones, near the Palestinian village of Fawwar in the south Hebron hills. The Israeli man pulled over and exited his vehicle when a Palestinian truck driver ran him over and drove off. The truck driver turned himself in to Palestinian authorities, telling them the incident was an accident.
Another British paper, The Daily Telegraph, reported that an Associated Press photographer at the scene witnessed the Israeli man emerging from his vehicle after it was pelted with stones, holding what appeared to be a wooden club. The witness said the man began hitting passing Palestinian vehicles and approached the very truck that ultimately ran him over and killed him.
Later on Wednesday evening, another Palestinian driver rammed his car into four Israeli soldiers stationed near Beit Omar and Gush Etzion settlement bloc in the West Bank, marking the latest in a string of attacks targeting Israeli security forces and civilians in Israel.
