A Palestinian from the Gaza Strip was charged for the crime of transferring hundreds of tons of building materials — originally designated for rehabilitation work — to Hamas for terrorism purposes, the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) announced on Wednesday.
Tamer Ahmed Muhammad Barim, a 36-year-old resident of the small village of Bani Suheila, was arrested over two months ago at the Erez Crossing, located at Gaza’s northern border with Israel, and later admitted to investigators what he was doing with the materials.
To accomplish this, Barim had to circumvent the UN monitoring system overseeing the transfer of materials earmarked for rehabilitation, following the devastation from last summer’s war between Israel and Hamas. The Shin Bet said Hamas was cynically using these materials for terrorism.
Barim was indicted by a Beersheva court about a month after his arrest. He was charged with three counts of endangering state security, including assisting a terrorist organization and purchasing items for use in acts of terrorism.
Though Barim was charged over a month ago, the details of the case remained totally classified until Wednesday. His sentence has not yet been announced.
“The security establishment views the event with utmost gravity and intends to continue its efforts to foil attempts to smuggle building materials for terrorist purposes and to deal with all those involved to the fullest extent of the law,” the Shin Bet said.
