Lebanon Arrests Alleged ‘Spies for Israel’

Lebanon’s General Security agency has arrested one Syrian and two Lebanese whom it claimed were spying for Israel, the Lebanese newspaper As-Safir reported on Monday.
The three were accused of gathering intelligence on security and military installments along the southern Lebanese border with Israel, according to the report.
The General Directorate of General Security pored over the investigation for several months before authorizing the arrests, read a statement from the agency. The agency said it had arrested one Syrian man, his Lebanese wife and another Lebanese man, all for spying in southern Lebanon for Israel.
The agency said the suspects had admitted to doing espionage work, including spying on security personnel and installations in southern Lebanon to be targeted later, and filmed roads and sensitive areas, according to the report.
Southern Lebanon is dominated by the terrorist group Hezbollah, which the Israeli military considers one of Israel’s top threats. Reports have surfaced before about Mossad agents infiltrating Hezbollah, which is also a major political power in Lebanon.
