Report: Actress Zooey Deschanel Converted to Judaism Before Tying the Knot
by Shiryn Ghermezian
Actress Zooey Deschanel converted to Judaism before marrying Jewish producer Jacob Pechenik in June, US Weekly reported on Monday.
An insider told the publication that the New Girl actress, and mother of 3-month-old Elsie, “converted to Judaism for Jacob.” Deschanel, 35, and Pechenik welcomed their first child together in July, and a source close to the couple said, “They’re loving the baby and marriage!”
Deschanel has displayed some familiarity with the Jewish holidays and even celebrated one with a friend in 2012. At the time, she posted a photo of herself on Twitter lighting a menorah and captioned the shot, “Happy Chanukah, y’all.”
In the past, the actress has avoided identifying with a particular faith, according to US Weekly. Deschanel, whose mother is Roman Catholic and father is Quaker, previously said, “I don’t attach myself to any one religion. My family is liberal. I was raised in the ‘you can be whatever you want’ kind of way. And in the end, I was like, ‘Eh.’”
