Famous Jewish illusionist David Blaine performed magic tricks and tried on some traditional Jewish garb in a surprise visit to a hat shop in a Hassidic neighborhood in Brooklyn on Wednesday.
The shop, Primo Hatters, in Crown Heights, posted photos on its Facebook page of the famed magician wearing a traditional Hassidic black coat, known as a kapota, and a black hat. Blaine afterwards visited the home of Shloime Rotter, the store’s owner, and performed tricks for his family.
On Wednesday night, Blaine visited the home of Zaki Tamir, president of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, and put on a show for other residents of the community, local blog COL Live reported. When asked is he would like to lay phylacteries, known as teffilin, he said he dons the ritual prayer boxes “quite often” with his rabbi, Rabbi Hillel Heller.
