The soldier, Pvt. Zvi Mizrahi, received fatal stab wounds to his upper torso and was pronounced dead by paramedics from Magen David Adom (MDA) at the scene of the attack. A woman in her 20s was also stabbed and taken to the Shaare Tzedek hospital in Jerusalem for treatment, and another middle-aged woman was lightly wounded and treated at a nearby Israeli check point.
The terrorist, later identified by Palestinian reports as Jamal Ahmed Taha, was shot and killed.
Israeli ZAKA emergency responders volunteer, Shlomo Gottleib, was on the scene of the attack within minutes.
“I was traveling towards Jerusalem on Route 443 when suddenly I heard a report on the ZAKA beeper about a stabbing attack at the gas station on 443 . . . A paramedic who was at the scene was treating the critically wounded victim and I joined him in resuscitation efforts,” Gottleib said.
“Many soldiers, MDA and ZAKA personnel arrived at the scene but unfortunately, after our resuscitation efforts failed, a doctor pronounced him dead.”
David Ben David, witnessed the attack as it was happening: “I got the gas station to fill up my truck, and after just a few minutes I hear ‘I’ve been stabbed, I’ve been stabbed.’ Then, I see the victims moving away from the terrorist who’s waving a knife around,” he told Army Radio.
The Dor Alon gas station on Route 443 where Monday’s attack happened was also the site of a similar stabbing attack in August, in which an Israeli soldier was stabbed before the Palestinian attacker was subdued by Israeli security forces and arrested.
Earlier Monday, two teenage Palestinian girls armed with scissors wounded an elderly Palestinian man before being shot by police, one fatally.
Twenty Israelis and one American yeshiva student have been killed in knifings, shootings and car-ramming attacks by Palestinians since October 1. At least 86 Palestinians, many of them the perpetrators of such terrorist acts, have been killed by Israeli security forces and civilians in the same time.
