The Israeli Navy and Israel Aerospace Industries conducted a successful test on Thursday of the Barak-8 missile interceptor, the nautical equivalent of the Iron Dome, Israeli site nrg reported.
Like its land-based equivalent, the Barak-8 is designed to intercept missiles and rockets, as well as enemy aircraft. In Thursday’s test, the Barak-8 was mounted onto the INS Lahav, a Sa’ar 5 class corvette, docked just south of the Haifa port, and successfully intercepted and destroyed a jet-powered drone.
The Barak-8 project began a few years ago as a joint venture between Israel and India. According to Chief of Navy Staff Brig.-Gen. Eli Sharvit, is expected to be officially deployed by the navies of both countries within the next two years.
