The foiled send was attempted sometime in April 2015, using data stolen from a network breach in 2013, according to the report.
“Our motto forever Death to America, Death to the Jews,” read the message, which was aimed at users across the Middle East. While SMSGlobal managed to stop most of the messages from being sent, about 5,000 were delivered to users in the United Arab Emirates, according to the report.
SMSGlobal defended its handling of the situation, stressing that users’ personal information had not been compromised by the hacker, whose identity remains unknown.
According to the report, users who were most vulnerable were those whose passwords were not recently updated or sufficiently complicated. SMSGlobal said adding more security measures could prevent future attacks.
SMSGlobal provides texting services to major brands and boasts one million users.
