Two Israelis were killed and one was critically wounded in a stabbing attack in Jerusalem on Wednesday afternoon, Hebrew media outlets reported.
Two Palestinian men went on a rampage, attempting to murder as many passersby as possible near the Jaffa Gate of the Old City. One of the victims purportedly tackled his assailant and struggled with him for some minutes, as he was being stabbed.
Border Policewomen opened fire on the terrorists, killing one of them and wounding the other. One of the Israeli victims — identified as 40-year-old father-of-two Ofer Ben-Ari from Jerusalem — was both stabbed by a terrorist and wounded by gunshots in the crossfire. He was evacuated to the hospital with the other victims, and died shortly thereafter.
The second fatality, who died of his wounds several hours later, was 45-year-old father-of-seven Reuven Birmacher from Kiryat Ye’arim, a town just outside of Jerusalem.
The wounded terrorist was treated at the scene by paramedics and evacuated to the Hadassah/Ein Kerem Medical Center, where he also died of his wounds.
The terrorists were later identified as Issa Asaf, 21, and Anan Hamad, 20, from the Qalandia refugee camp. Both had previously served in jail, Hamad in 2010 for wielding a knife at Israeli soldiers at the Qalandia checkpoint, and Asaf this year, for participating in violent demonstrations.
This is the latest attack in what has become a near-daily occurrence since the start of the surge in Palestinian terrorism in Israel since September.
