Jewish youths in Budapest were subject to verbal antisemitic abuse this week, the EverydayAntisemitism blog posted on its website on Tuesday.
According to the report, six people approached a group of Jewish youths in the Hungarian capital and began hurling antisemitic epithets.
The aggressors screamed “dirty Jews” and “you killed Jesus” before running off.
Despite a short argument that ensued, no physical altercation was reported. According to the blog, no passersby intervened.
Controversy erupted recently in Hungary over plans to erect a national monument in Budapest honoring Bálint Hóman, an eminent historian, who served twice as Hungary’s religion and education minister both before and during WWII. Hóman was a proponent of anti-Jewish laws and a Nazi supporter.
Jewish groups fumed and the US expressed shock over the slated statue. As a result of the outcry, according to local reports, the plan to built the monument was scrapped.
