British Paralympic Star Calls for Minute of Silence at Rio Games in Memory of Israelis Murdered at Munich Olympics

A leading British Paralympic star insisted that a minute of silence be held at the opening ceremony of this summer’s Rio Olympic Games, in memory of the Israeli athletes murdered at the 1972 Munich Games, the UK’s Jewish News reported on Tuesday.
Ade Adepitan, a wheelchair basketball medalist, told the UK publication, “It was an atrocity which was committed in the Olympic Village, and of course that’s how we should remember and commemorate within the Olympic world.”
The UK Jewish community and families of the 11 murdered Israeli athletes failed in their lobbying to have a minute of silence at the London Games in 2012. However, Jewish News reported, they are again trying to persuade the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to memorialize the murdered Israelis at this year’s Olympic games, which start Aug. 5 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Adepitan was a guest speaker this week at the annual dinner of UK Friends of Yad Sarah, an Israeli charity that lends people wheelchairs, crutches and other equipment.
