JNS.org – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday reportedly met with several top American Jewish leaders on the topic of ongoing negotiations that may lead to a resumption of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Israel.
Malcolm Hoenlein, vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, along with leaders of other Jewish groups such as the Anti-Defamation League and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, met Erdogan and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu at the Cankaya Palace in Ankara, according to Turkish and Israeli media reports.
The Israeli government asked Hoenlein, who is close with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to deliver several messages to the Turkish leaders during the meeting, Haaretz reported.
Turkey and Israel have so far been unsuccessful in efforts to restore their diplomatic ties, which deteriorated following the May 2010 Gaza flotilla incident.
