Israel’s domestic chocolate industry is growing and among its export destinations is none other than its southern neighbor, Egypt.
In figures released by the Israeli Economy Ministry, Israel exported some $45,000 worth of domestically produced chocolate to the North African country.
Still, most Israeli-made chocolate went to US and European markets, with the US importing more than $5 million and the UK importing $1.2 million. France imported $601,000 and Russia $157,000. In all, Israeli chocolates reached store shelves in 42 countries, according to the figures.
In total, Israeli chocolate exports reached $10 million in 2015, which is still a minuscule fraction of the global chocolate trade — Germany exported $4.9 billion in 2014, Belgium, $3 billion, and the US, $1.6 billion.
But Israeli chocolates continued to permeate far-flung markets, including in Angola and Brazil, and with consumption having tripled in eastern Asia in recent years, according to the Economy Ministry, the market is only looking up for Israel’s 28 companies exporting the sweets.
