Soldiers in the IDF’s new Cyber Defense Division just completed their first drill, involving the simulation of a major security breach at the hands of Israel’s enemies, Israel’s Channel 2 reported on Monday, when the Israeli military released a video of the exercise.
During the exercise, called “Olympus,” the trainees had to respond to challenges such as cyber espionage, booby-trapped websites and network-hacking.
The first of its kind in the IDF, the drill was aimed at examining the command capabilities of the cadets in the sphere of cybernetic defense. Upon completion of their training, these cadets will become the first officers in the new division, and will be charged with combating various cyber-threats simultaneously.
According to Channel 2, the drill took the form of a competition, with cadets divided into teams, racing to deal with several cyber-breaches simultaneously.
“Our goal was to prepare them,” explained the commander of the training team. “So that when there is an actual attack, they will be as ready as possible to deal with it.”
Within the framework of this new division, regular conscripts and reservists will respond in real time to cyber-attacks against civilian and military networks.
“When we face a cybernetic Sept. 11, we will know how to deal with it,” a senior IDF officer told reporters last month.
