Daniel Sperber
Professor at Bar-Ilan University
Rabbi Daniel Sperber has written extensively on applying Jewish law to the modern era, calling it “dynamic”: “When cultural circumstances change, one has to face up to these changes and accommodate them.”
Sperber, an Israel Prize-winning Talmud professor at Bar-Ilan University has authored an eight-volume work on Jewish customs, among numerous other publications and is a pioneer of halachic discussions of women in Judaism.
Sperber explained his rationale for encouraging a greater role for women in Orthodox practice, saying, “if you can find a position of leniency, you should do so. So when things are permitted, they should be encouraged.”
