In the United Nations, the Pacific nation the Republic of Palau tends to vote as Israel does, in no small part since Tommy Remengesau Jr. assumed the presidency.
Israel, the first non-Pacific nation to declare diplomatic relations with Palau at its independence in 1994, favored its admission into the United Nations and offered economic aid to the young state.
In 2015, the UN General Assembly’s considered 20 resolutions singling out Israel for criticism — and only three resolutions on the rest of the world combined. (The three that do not concern Israel focus on Syria, Iran and North Korea.) Palau overwhelmingly voted alongside Israel, in defense of the Jewish state.
