JNS.org – On Thursday, fans around the world mourned Prince Rogers Nelson, better known as “Prince” and at one point the “Artist Formerly Known as Prince,” who suddenly died at the age of 57. He was found unresponsive in an elevator at his studios in Chanhassen, Minn.
There are many ways to honor an artist. One of the best ways is, of course, to listen to the artist’s music. Prince, who was religious man — he was born a Seventh-day Adventist and later became a Jehovah’s Witness — had numerous Christian themes in his songs, as pointed out by U2 frontman Bono on Friday.
Though he wasn’t Jewish, a few Judaic themes did also appear in Prince’s songs, which are particularly poignant during Passover:
“Undisputed” – from 1999’s “Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic”
Once again I don’t follow trends, they just follow me
Just like the Israelies through the Red Sea
It might take you some time but you will want to see
The undisputed truth and get free

“Chelsea Rodgers” – from 2007’s “Planet Earth”
Chelsea Rodgers was a model
But she really rocked and rolled
She kept her tears up in a bottle
Poured them out to save her soul
Come on, Chelsea
Come on
Next to her, they just a fool
Chelsea read more books than a few
Like Moses was a Pharaoh in the 18th Dynasty
And Rome was chilling in Carthage in 33 BCE
