JNS.org – Although former secretary of state Hillary Clinton has declared herself as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee after winning Tuesday’s primary in California, her Democratic rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.), has refused to exist the race and is vowing to “continue the fight” for the party’s nomination.
“Next Tuesday we continue the fight in the last primary in Washington DC,” Sanders—who is Jewish, but has come under fire during his campaign for comments perceived as pro-Palestinian and for his appointment of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement supporter Cornel West to the Democratic Party’s platform-drafting committee—told California supporters. “And then we take our fight for social, economic, racial, and environmental justice to [the Democratic convention in] Philadelphia.”
Sanders is also expected to meet with President Barack Obama on Thursday to discuss “how to build on the extraordinary work he has done to engage millions of Democratic voters, and to build on that enthusiasm.”
Clinton had already secured the necessary 2,383 delegates for the nomination before the California primary, according to a count by the Associated Press. If her nomination is cemented during the Democratic convention, she will become the first female presidential nominee in U.S. history and will likely compete against Republican candidate Donald Trump.
