An Israeli college was ranked by the website Fashionista as one of the world’s 25 best fashion schools in 2016.
The Ramat Gan-based Shenkar College of Engineering and Design came in at number 9 on the list. The college, where most classes are taught in English, has programs in fashion, textile and jewelry design. Its famous alumni include former Lanvin artistic director Alber Elbaz and Israeli fashion designer Nili Lotan.
“Definitely off the beaten path and with a distinct point of view, this well-kept secret has an amazing — and incredibly affordable — fashion design program,” Fashionista said about Shenkar, adding that international students are accepted as second- or third-year students, but applicants must have completed at least one year of fashion school elsewhere.
Shenkar was founded in 1970 as the College for Fashion and Textile Technology. “Combining faculties of engineering, design and art is the basis of this institution’s unique multidisciplinary academics,” according to the school’s website.
Fashionista created the list of best fashion schools by taking into account factors such as tuition, successful alumni, financial aid options and quality of the faculty. London’s Central Saint Martins took the number 1 spot on the list, followed by the London College of Fashion, and Parsons, the New School for Design, located in New York City.
